How to Mummify
Taking care of the body was the first step to afterlife. During the process of mummification, in between the layers of linen, amulets were placed for good luck in the afterlife. They believed that everything in their tomb was going to the afterlife with them. Ancient Egyptians believed that the afterlife was a dangerous place, and they had to go through obstacles to get to there. As soon as the mummy was in its tomb, the afterlife had started. They were only buried on the left side of the Nile River. Ancient Egyptians mummified so that the spirit could move on the afterlife properly.
The many steps of mummification were meaningful to Ancient Egyptians because they wanted to preserve the body. First, embalmers made a slit on the lower left abdomen and removed all the internal organs. They stuffed the body with sawdust or sand so that it stayed in its original shape. Then the body was covered in natron salt and placed on a slanted table to drain and dry out all the liquids. Forty days later, the salt was removed and embalmers tried to make the body look lifelike and rubbed spices and oils on their skin. Everything was packed again with sawdust or sand and everything was sewn shut. Then in fifteen days all the body was wrapped in many layers of linen bandages that were soaked in resin. This is important because it preserves the body for the soul to go to the afterlife properly.
